Module 1 - Centering the Learner

Overview

In this module, you’ll explore the core frameworks that support inclusive, accessible online learning: Human-Centered Design (HCD), Universal Design for Learning (UDL), and Web Accessibility (A11Y). You’ll also discover key learning theories that explain WHY these frameworks are effective for all learners. By the end, you’ll create your own learner persona to guide your future course design decisions, grounded in both practical frameworks and learning science.

Objectives

By the end of this module, you will be able to:

  • Define and differentiate HCD, UDL, and A11Y.
  • Explain how each concept supports inclusive, learner-centered design.
  • Identify five key learning theories that inform accessible course design.
  • Connect learning theories to accessibility and inclusive design principles.
  • Identify strategies to apply frameworks and theories in your course design.
  • Reflect on the needs and preferences of your target learners across diverse characteristics.
  • Create a comprehensive learner persona to guide your design decisions.
