Design Process

Needs Analysis

The QUADS Program faced a challenge with training new mentors who joined mid-year. While mentors who started in fall received comprehensive in-person training, mid-year joiners missed this valuable opportunity. To address this gap, the program needed a new training solution that would provide consistent foundational knowledge while remaining flexible enough to work around busy student schedules. The training needed to be both structured and interactive, ensuring engagement while fitting within a strict 90-minute timeframe to accommodate students’ limited availability.

The project’s main goals were to:

  1. Create a standardized, engaging training program to prepare student mentors.

  2. Equip mentors with communication, leadership, and cultural competency skills.

  3. Deliver content in an accessible, user-friendly online format.

  4. Develop interactive learning experiences to enhance engagement and retention.

  5. Provide progress tracking and self-reflection tools to measure impact.

Core Features

Online Format

  • The online delivery system makes the training highly accessible, allowing mentors to complete it according to their schedules.
  • This format supports content that can be continuously updated as mentoring best practices evolve.
  • A Padlet discussion board creates opportunities for mentors to interact, share experiences, and build a collective knowledge base that benefits future cohorts.

Interactive Learning Activities

  • Mentors participate in role-playing exercises that simulate real mentoring situations and watch video examples of effective mentorship in action.
  • They also engage in self-reflection activities to evaluate their mentoring approach.
  • Throughout the training, quizzes verify understanding of key concepts, while discussion prompts encourage mentors to learn from each other’s perspectives and experiences.

Task Sequence

The training follows a structured pathway, ensuring mentors develop skills progressively while staying within the 90-minute time limit:

  1. Introduction to Mentorship: Mentors learn about their role, expectations, and the impact they have on mentees.

  2. Effective Communication: Focuses on active listening, setting clear expectations, and giving constructive feedback.

  3. Cultural Competency & Inclusion: Explores strategies for mentoring students from diverse backgrounds with empathy.
