Lesson 3: Accessibility Strategy

Home / Courses / Universal Design for Modern Course Creators / Why Accessibility Matters for Every Learner

Overview

Accessible design doesn’t stop at individual documents or videos. It’s a mindset that applies to your entire course. In this lesson, you’ll create a strategy for maintaining accessibility across content types, platforms, and updates. You’ll also explore legal requirements, organizational policies, and how to prepare for ongoing improvements.

Objectives

By the end of this lesson, you will be able to:

  • Identify strategies for course-wide accessibility consistency.
  • Integrate accessibility and UDL into your design process.
  • Describe key accessibility-related laws and standards (e.g., WCAG, ADA, Section 508).
  • Develop a plan to maintain and update accessible practices over time.
  • Locate resources and policies to guide long-term implementation.

Exercise

Before moving on, take a moment to reflect on what you’ve just learned. These questions are designed to help you connect the lesson content to your own course and your future learners.

You can jot down your answers, share your thoughts in the comments, or just reflect quietly. These small reflections will help you shape your learner persona at the end of the module.

  1. Who are your potential learners and what specific needs might they have?
  2. Identify 2-3 characteristics that will influence how you design your course.

Lesson Checklist

  1. Watch the video lesson
  2. Review the resources
